Mannington Goes to School

Kids aren’t the only ones with school on their mind right now. At Mannington, we’re all in on education not only during Fall but year-round, too, by supporting educational programs that benefit students and teachers.

Now in its 15th year, Mannington’s annual “Art is Cool” program recognizes the talent of students from Salem Country, New Jersey, high schools. “Every year, there’s incredible talent. This program has evolved from just painting and drawing to including sculpture, photography and computer art, too” says Keith Campbell, Mannington Chairman of the Board. “It’s also a testament to the wonderful teachers and school administrators who continue to push to keep these programs in the schools.”

Members of Mannington’s styling department serve as judges—all of whom have fine arts training. “There’s so much you can do with art as a career these days, “adds Joe Amato, Mannington’s Vice President of Residential Styling. “Our business relies on artists to design the floors. It’s not something people always think about when they think of art, but there’s a lot of opportunity for artistic talent in our business.”

Winners are announced during an gallery-style exhibit at Mannington’s Salem headquarters. Now a highly anticipated event in the local art circuit. Over 300 students have participated in the “Art is Cool” program since its inception.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation, Mannington

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a privately funded, not-for profit organization, has awarded college scholarships to thousands of top-performing students across the U.S. since 1955. As a corporate sponsor, Mannington underwrites a scholarship for children of its employees. Entry forms are submitted during the student’s junior year of high school and winners are selected by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation based on PSAT/NMSQT scores and other criteria. Recipients of Mannington scholarships have gone on to attend such prestigious universities as Stanford, William and Mary, and the University of Georgia.

This year, the Mannington scholarships were awarded to Kai Crombie, who’ll be studying physics at the University of California/Berkeley, and Phillip Harmon, who’ll be studying aeronautical engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“I believe there’s nothing more valuable than a good education”, says Keith Campbell, (shown here delivering a commencement speech at his alma mater, Muskingum College, where he also serves on the Board of Trustees). “As Benjamin Franklin said, ‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’ Our investment in the future of these young people will sustain us into the future, and we are proud to recognize their achievements.”

Southern New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, Mannington

For 26 years, Mannington has been a sponsor of the South Jersey Summer Institute for Educators. We host a half-day program for participating teachers (from grades 4-12 and across all disciplines) at our Salem headquarters. Following a luncheon, teachers meet several Mannington executives to learn about our company history, products and ways we support the local community. They then are taken on a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of our manufacturing plant to see how our sheet vinyl products are made.

At Mannington, we believe that education is a life-long pursuit. Every day, we learn something new that helps us be better people and a better company. That’s why we’re proud to support students and teachers in ways like this.
