Rock the Block Team Spotlight: Keith & Evan

  • Design

Season five of HGTV’s Rock the Block has come to an end, but we’re still loving all of the beautiful homes each of the teams created this season and wanted to take a closer look at the work each team did.

Each team competing in season five of Rock the Block had been part of past seasons of Rock the Block, but weren’t the winners of the main competition. One of those teams included Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas of Bargain Block. Keith and Evan had previously competed on Rock the Block in Season 3, set in Charleston, South Carolina. Not only did they not win the main competition that season, they did not win any of the weekly challenges, either. So for season five, they were very eager to redeem themselves.

Heading into the competition, Keith and Evan decided to go with an Organic Modern design theme, filling the house with calming neutral colors, natural materials, rich textures, and beautiful detailing. In many rooms of their home, Keith and Evan used Kona flooring in Sunrise, part of Mannington’s ADURA®Max luxury vinyl collection, which has the organic color variations and subtle spalting that’s a natural fit for their style of decor.

Kitchen & Dining Room

In the season five premiere, Keith and Evan worked on designing their kitchen and dining room. Since the teams were starting with blank slate homes without existing interior walls, they worked to create some smaller defined spaces that feel inviting. This meant adding architectural features like arched doorways and stunning ceiling beams that make a statement and bring the space in. Their kitchen and dining areas are full of chic neutrals, brass accents, quartz counters and backsplash, and unique artwork that brings in lots of texture.

Living Room & Guest Suites

In episode two, Keith and Evan carried the ceiling beams from the kitchen and dining room over into the living room, creating a stylish and consistent aesthetic. Even though they were working to create defined spaces, their living room feels anything but small. They added a large sliding door to maximize views and bring in more natural lighting to make the space feel open. They also added a fireplace, window seat, and cozy sofas to create a living room that felt very sophisticated but comfortable.

Keith and Evan were able to plan their space in a way that allowed them to create two guest bedrooms, including one that can double as a home office space, and two bathrooms. All of these spaces continue the Organic Modern theme with things like natural colors, lots of natural colors, and textured decorative elements.

Master Suite

As Keith and Evan headed upstairs to work on their master suite in episode three, maximizing natural light was one of their top priorities. They also brought in furniture with curved lines and earthy tones, along with some touches of glamor in a chandelier and striking gold artwork above the bed’s headboard. In the master bath and closet, Keith and Evan went all in on luxurious touches like marble bathroom counters, and a refrigerator and fireplace in the closet.

Multi-Functional Room Challenge

After spending episodes four and five working on their home’s exterior and outdoor spaces, a surprise challenge brought them back indoors in episode six. Each team was tasked with creating a multi-purpose guest bedroom in just 48 hours. Keith and Evan opted to create a guest bedroom that can also work as a meditation room. The final result was a beautiful, calming space that included custom artwork and built-in storage which perfectly complemented the home’s Organic Modern aesthetic.

Finishing Touches

In the season five finale, Keith and Evan put the final touches on their home by creating a white oak built-in office area in the loft of their home. Whether it’s being used for work, studying, or storage, their office area makes a real statement.
